The Laurel Ridge Community College 5K returns Saturday, Sept. 19, giving participants an opportunity to support students while honoring the memory of a beloved college employee. Proceeds from the annual run/walk benefit The Recovery Connection Scholarship in Honor of Alex Burton, Burton was a Laurel Ridge graduate and employee whose commitment to helping others continues to make an impact years after her passing.

During a recent discussion on The Valley Today, representatives from The Recovery Connection shared how the scholarship helps women in recovery pursue educational goals and build brighter futures. The organization was founded by Julie Judy and Meredith Speir-Cavalier, who emphasized the personal significance of the scholarship and the lasting influence Burton had on their lives and work. The event serves as both a community fundraiser and a meaningful tribute to a friend remembered for her compassion and support of others.
