Laurel Ridge Community College provides vibrant educational opportunities that pave the way for successful careers. Recently, our commitment to fostering career growth was highlighted in an episode of “The Valley Today,” hosted by Janet Michael. Janet was joined by Guy Curtis, director of marketing, and Lisa Heiser, a fast-track career training coach, to discuss the myriad career prospects available through our programs.

The Trades Job Fair takes place May 1, at Hazel Hall on our Fauquier Campus. This event is designed not only for our students, but also for community members of all ages who are considering a career switch or looking to enhance their skills. Heiser, who has been instrumental in organizing the fair, shared valuable insights into what attendees can expect.

“We’re hoping to have about 50 employers,” she said, highlighting the extensive opportunities available.

Trades careers such as welding, HVAC, electrical work, and fiber optics are experiencing a surge in demand for skilled workers. Heiser emphasized the expedited nature and financial attractiveness of these programs, citing examples like the five-week fiber optics and 11-week heavy equipment operator courses. Graduates from these programs can quickly start earning substantial incomes, making them highly appealing career paths.

Curtis echoed these sentiments, pointing out the economic and social benefits of pursuing a career in the trades.

“From construction project management, to becoming a certified welder, the opportunities are vast and varied. Our trades job fair is just the starting point for many,” he said.

Behind the scenes, career coaches like Heiser play a pivotal role in guiding students and career switchers toward their goals. Heiser recounted her journey from being a high school career coach, helping students figure out their post-graduation plans, to her current role where she mentors individuals who may be grappling with career uncertainties.“It’s all about matching a person’s strengths and interests with the right career path,” she said.

Curtis reminisced about earlier industry conversations that revealed a shift in career paradigms. Unlike past generations that often stayed in one job for decades, newer generations are more inclined toward having multiple career changes. This evolving outlook makes the role of career coaching even more significant.

The discussion also touched on the growing number of women in traditionally male-dominated trades. Heiser shared inspiring stories of young women becoming welders and HVAC technicians, a trend also seen in various public works departments.

In conclusion, both Heiser and Curtis emphasized the importance of reaching out to career coaches and participating in events like the Trades Job Fair. These avenues not only open doors to lucrative careers, but also ensure that individuals are making informed decisions about their future paths.

So, whether you’re a parent looking to guide your student, or an adult in search of a career transition, Laurel Ridge offers a promising gateway to success in trades. Check out more information about the career fair at https://laurelridgeworkforce.com/trades-job-fair/.
