Earning enough dual-enrollment credits to receive her associate degree while still in high school was a challenge, but one Sofia Kozhenevsky was glad she tackled. Kozhenevsky earned her associate degree in general studies simultaneously with her diploma from Warren County High School in spring 2024, and is now studying interior design at Virginia Tech.
Kozhenevsky, who played volleyball for her high school and has enjoyed playing intramurally in college, said she earned her dual-enrollment credits through a combination of classes at Warren County, online and on campus at Laurel Ridge.
“I really enjoyed my government class,” she said. “There were a lot of debates. I also really enjoyed computer science. It was a really difficult class, but coding and making games and running different software was really cool. I also loved my public speaking class. The professor gave me points I still use to this day.”
Kozhenevsky said she decided to dual enroll to get “ahead of the game.”
“I just knew I could do it, and I put my mind to it,” she said. “It saved me money. I have a lot more free time because I don’t have to take any of the general education courses at Virginia Tech. I’m taking on a minor because I have the extra classes available.”
She’s decided to minor in entrepreneurship and might also add a language minor, said Kozhenevsky.
“I’ve already recommended that my sister dual enroll,” she said. “I definitely think it’s worth it. Although it’s hard, you learn a lot from it. It helped me a lot.”
