Faculty Bio

Lisa Kara

Ms. Kara moved to the Shenandoah Valley from the Northern Virginia area where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from George Mason University. In college, she wavered between a career in education or law and eventually became a police officer.

Ms. Kara completed Basic Law Enforcement Officer training at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy. Later, she graduated from the Virginia Forensic Sciences Academy and became certified as a Computer Forensic Examiner by the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists. As a police officer Ms. Kara held several positions: Computer Forensic Examiner, Detective, Crime Scene Technician, and Patrol Officer. She was a member of federal and state task forces to identify and investigate child exploitation and electronic crimes.

While working a busy midnight shift, she completed her Master of Forensic Sciences degree at George Washington University. She “gets” the many challenges of managing college, work, and family while trying to maintain social relationships and stay healthy. Always impassioned to educate, Ms. Kara worked with community groups and individuals to promote internet safety and mentored fellow officers who were attending college. These roles led to a part time teaching position. In 2010, Ms. Kara became a full-time professor with the Virginia Community College System, combining her two interests – law and education. While teaching, Ms. Kara completed all required courses in the online criminal justice doctoral program at Nova Southeastern University.

In addition to teaching criminal justice courses, Ms. Kara is the Administration of Justice Program Lead at Laurel Ridge Community College. She says, “Going back to college was one of the best decisions I have made! Education has transformed my life and the lives of countless students I have had the privilege to know.”
