Course Description

This course presents the aeronautical knowledge required for FAA-approved commercial operations as a Remote Pilot with a small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) rating. It covers regulations applicable to small UAS operations, loading and performance, emergency procedures, crew resource management, performance assessment of the small unmanned aircraft, and maintenance/inspection procedures. The course prepares students for the FAA written examination required to obtain the Remote Pilot certificate. Lecture: 2-3 hours. Total: 8 hours per week. Approximately 2 hours of work per session outside of class are required to complete readings and assignments.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed to prepare individuals interested in becoming certified as a Remote Pilot with a small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) rating. It provides students with in-depth coverage and understanding of the current FAA sUAS certification topics.

  • Exhibit sufficient knowledge to successfully complete the FAA requirements for obtaining a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate with a small UAS rating.
  • Understand the limitations and responsibilities of operating a sUAS in FAA-controlled airspace.

  • Applicable regulations relating to small unmanned aircraft system rating privileges, limitations, and flight operations.
  • Requirements for small UAS registration, markings, and condition.
  • United States airspace classification, operating requirements, and flight restrictions affecting small unmanned aircraft operations.
  • Procedures for requesting a waiver for eligible sUAS requirements.
  • Distinguishing between aviation weather sources and the effects of weather on small unmanned aircraft performance.
  • Loading of small unmanned aircraft.

  • Performance of small unmanned aircraft.
  • FAA aeromedical factors.
  • Aeronautical decision-making and judgment.

  • Certification as an sUAS pilot and crew member.

  • Recording and reporting required FAA documents related to accidents, maintenance, flight paths, and other situations as required.

Next Steps after the Program

Upon completing the bootcamp and earning the FAA Part 107 Credential, students can receive Credit for Prior Learning towards the UMS 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Remote Pilot Ground School course. This course is part of the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Operator (Drones) Career Studies Certificate. Students may also continue their studies by pursuing the Technical Studies degree.
