Shenandoah University Campus Visit

It was a beautiful day for the Future Educators Academy’s visit to to Shenandoah University on April 24. Students enjoyed a glimpse into campus life, beginning with an informative presentation from the executive director of undergraduate recruitment who shared valuable insights for anyone considering applying to or attending SU.

A group of approximately 18 students pose in front of a large "STU" letter sign on a landscaped brick retaining wall, with a brick academic building visible in the background. Most students wear matching navy blue Laurel Ridge Future Educators Academy t-shirts. The group is arranged in two informal rows, with some students standing along the wall and others seated on top of it. The photo is taken on a sunny day with a bright sky and scattered clouds.

The day continued with a campus tour led by a Hornet Ambassador, whose enthusiasm and knowledge brought the university to life as we visited highlights, such as the Ohrstrom‑Bryant Theatre and the esports arena in the Hazel‑Pruitt Armory. A meet‑and‑greet with SU’s Education faculty and students followed, giving our group the opportunity to hear firsthand about their experiences before breaking into smaller groups for classroom visits.

After a busy morning, students enjoyed a buffet‑style lunch in the Family Kitchen at Allen Dining Hall. We wrapped up our visit with a stop at the campus bookstore in the Brandt Student Center. It was a fantastic day, and we are grateful to Shenandoah University for being such a welcoming host. We already look forward to visiting again next year.

Week of the Young Child Art Exhibit

More than 80 pieces of children’s artwork from community preschools and early childhood education centers were collected for an art exhibit displayed at Laurel Ridge throughout the month of April. FEA students collaborated with Art Professor Monica James to appropriately label and display the artwork.

Professor James shared key insights on how art contributes to early brain development. Building on this experience, FEA students completed a persuasive letter assignment in their EDU 207: Human Growth and Development course. Students advocated for the importance of art education in schools through letters addressed to school superintendents, principals, school board members, and legislators. These letters were framed and displayed as part of the exhibit.

A reception was hosted in the Sekel Art Atrium  to recognize the Week of the Young Child and to raise community awareness of early childhood education initiatives.

Laurel Ridge Hosts Quarterly Governing Board Meeting

On April 20, Laurel Ridge Community College proudly hosted the quarterly Governing Board Meeting for the Future Educators Academy (FEA), welcoming division superintendents and designees from across the region.

Student and Faculty Perspectives

A highlight of the meeting was hearing directly from students currently enrolled in the Laurel Ridge FEA. Students Sarah and Eliza shared their personal experiences, offering thoughtful insight into how FEA has supported their academic journeys and fostered a strong sense of community. Adding to the student perspective, Laurel Ridge Education Professor Jennifer Strickler spoke about the program’s academic rigor and the impact of students’ practicum experiences.

Program Updates and Sustainability Planning

Leadership from both institutions provided updates on recent and upcoming initiatives. Germanna’s FEA director and Laurel Ridge’s FEA director highlighted key milestones, including participation in Old Dominion University’s Innovation Summit, engaging guest speaker sessions, upcoming student orientations, and Signing Day for Germanna’s inaugural FEA graduating class.

One of the most important discussions focused on future sustainability. With current funding set to expire in June 2028, board members engaged in meaningful conversations about exploring a variety of funding options to ensure the long‑term success of FEA. The meeting concluded with plans for continued collaboration.

The next Governing Board Meeting is scheduled for July 27, and will be hosted at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center.

Reflecting on a Milestone Year

The 2025–26 school year is quickly coming to a close, and what a milestone it has been. Our FEA students are finishing their first year of college, reaching the halfway point toward an Associate of Science Degree in Education. That is no small accomplishment, and students and parents alike should feel proud of the dedication and hard work it took to get here.

See you in the fall!

Looking Ahead to Fall and Beyond

This fall, our seniors will begin the next phase of their journey: preparing for transfer. We will support them through college applications, the FAFSA, scholarship opportunities, and Core Praxis test preparation, all while working toward the goal of graduating as Governor’s Scholars with both a high school diploma and an associate degree.

FEA continues to grow. We are excited to welcome the next cohort of 27 FEA scholars in fall 2026. Orientation will take place on May 19, and many current students have volunteered to support and guide the incoming class.

Making the Most of Summer

Summer offers a well‑deserved break, but it is also a valuable time for growth. Encouraging students to pursue part‑time work or volunteer opportunities can help build confidence and strengthen résumés. We are currently coordinating potential volunteer opportunities with local school divisions and Shenandoah University, and more information will be shared soon.

Reading is another simple and powerful way for students to continue learning. Just 15 to 20 minutes a day can strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Students may enjoy professional titles such as “The Morning Meeting Book, Conscious Discipline” by Dr. Becky A. Bailey, “The First‑Year Teacher’s Survival Guide, Dear Teacher, Teach Like a Pirate” by Dave Burgess, or “The Courage to Teach” by Parker J. Palmer.

Encouraging Balance and Independence

Summer is also an excellent time to explore college campuses, deepen extracurricular passions, and develop life skills, such as budgeting, cooking, or basic car maintenance. Just as important is rest. Encouraging balance and self‑care helps students recharge and prevents burnout as they prepare for the next academic year.

Have a wonderful summer and make lasting memories.
