In a recent episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael spoke with Dr. Cheri Maea, dean of early college and high school partnerships, and Guy Curtis, director of marketing at Laurel Ridge. The discussion focused on Laurel Ridge’s Early College and Dual Enrollment programs, which give students the opportunity to earn college credits before they even leave high school.

Dr. Maea shared how Laurel Ridge partners with local high schools to place career coaches in every school. These coaches guide students through the process, ensuring that no one feels overwhelmed or left behind. Whether a student’s path leads to enrollment or employment, we provide personalized support to help them make informed decisions. Education is not one-size-fits-all, and we’re committed to meeting students where they are.

One of the most exciting opportunities we offer is the ability for students to earn the first 30 credit hours of a transfer degree at no cost while still in high school. This removes financial barriers and gives students a strong academic foundation before they even graduate. We believe the hardest part of college should never be the application process, so we’ve streamlined admissions and support to make the transition as smooth as possible.

The benefits of dual enrollment go beyond affordability. Students gain confidence, explore career paths and experience college-level learning early. Our guaranteed transfer agreements with major Virginia universities make continuing education seamless, while programs like the Future Educators Academy and Trades Academy prepare students for high-demand careers. Homeschool students also find a welcoming environment through initiatives like our developing Home Scholars Academy.

Parents play a vital role in this journey, and many are surprised by the opportunities available. That’s why we work hard to provide resources and clear up misconceptions. Dr. Maea encourages families to reach out directly — our Early College team is here to answer questions and offer guidance every step of the way.
