In a recent episode of “The Valley Today,” Laurel Ridge showcased the impactful work of its Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Host Janet Michael welcomed Brandy Boies, director of public relations and Andy Gyurisin, director of the Laurel Ridge SBDC, for a conversation about how the college serves as a vital resource for small businesses in the region.

Boies shared how Laurel Ridge fosters a welcoming community — not just for students, but for entrepreneurs and small business owners. She emphasized the college’s commitment to supporting local economic growth through education, collaboration and innovation.

Gyurisin provided insight into the SBDC’s history, noting that for more than 25 years, it has been a cornerstone of small business support in the area. Thanks to federal, state and local funding, the SBDC offers free and confidential services to business owners, helping them navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

A key point of discussion was the misconception that the SBDC operates separately from the college. In reality, it is fully integrated into Laurel Ridge, leveraging resources — from technology and facilities, to passionate faculty and staff — to empower entrepreneurs. Gyurisin stressed the importance of breaking down silos and building strong connections between the college and the business community to foster mutual growth.

The SBDC offers educational programming, including seminars and workshops developed in partnership with local chambers of commerce. These events provide valuable learning and networking opportunities in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Boies discussed the many ways Laurel Ridge engages with the community, from virtual information sessions, to advisory committees that help shape the curriculum to meet real-world needs. She underscored the college’s commitment to being responsive and inclusive, always evolving to better serve the region.

Laurel Ridge is proud to be a hub of support, innovation and growth for small businesses. Whether you’re just starting out, or looking to expand, the SBDC is here to help you succeed. Go to laurelridgesbdc.org to learn more, or contact Andy Gyursin at [email protected].
