At Laurel Ridge Community College, commencement season is more than just a ceremony — it’s a celebration of dreams realized, challenges overcome, and futures launched. In a recent episode of The Valley Today, our director of public relations, Brandy Hawkins Boies, appeared with Deborah Zelleka-Yearwood, a remarkable student and this year’s health professions commencement speaker.
Brandy shared exciting updates about our upcoming commencement festivities, which will span two days to honor the achievements of our 1,090 graduates! With such a milestone to celebrate, we’re going big: think grand tents, joyful reunions, and heartfelt moments shared with family, friends, faculty, and staff.
Here’s what to expect:
- Thursday, May 15: Health Professions Commencement at 2 p.m., followed by coin and pinning ceremonies on our Middletown Campus.
- Friday, May 16: Commencement for all other academic programs at 2 p.m., also on the Middletown Campus.
One of the most moving parts of the episode came when Deborah shared her personal journey. A mother who returned to school in her 40s, Deborah was inspired by the care her son Joshua received as a newborn. She pursued an associate degree in surgical technology, balancing coursework with family life during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of education to transform lives.
Deborah expressed deep gratitude for the support she received — from her family, her professors (especially Ashley Seabolt), and the financial aid opportunities at Laurel Ridge. Thanks to scholarships and grants, she completed her degree with zero out-of-pocket expenses — a testament to our commitment to accessible, affordable education.
Throughout the conversation, Brandy and Deborah reflected on the bonds formed in the classroom, the practical and theoretical knowledge gained, and the life-changing impact of community college. Deborah’s story is a shining example of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
As we prepare to celebrate the Class of 2025, we’re reminded that every graduate has a story worth telling. Deborah’s journey, which she lovingly dedicates to her late father, is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
To our graduates: we are so proud of you. Let’s celebrate your success — together.
