Bétit served twenty years in the US Army as a German and Russian linguist and military intelligence analyst, earning a doctorate from Georgetown University. He wrote two Defense Intelligence Agency studies on Soviet Ground Forces tactics and published over ten articles in various military periodicals on military and strategic subjects in the 1970s.
