The community is invited to join the Laurel Ridge Community College Police Department as it hosts National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 6-9 p.m. along with Middletown and Stephens City police departments.

The nationwide community-building effort between police and their neighbors was started by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984 with more than 2 million people in 400 communities. Now, more than 38 million people in all 50 states, U.S. territories and on U.S. military bases around the world participate in a variety of ways, such as block parties, cookouts and festivals.

“There are going to be K-9 demonstrations with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police at the Middletown Campus,” Laurel Ridge Police Lt. Chris Adams says. “An aircare helicopter will be landing.”

Additionally, there will also be displays by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Carrier Services, Stephens City Fire and Rescue Co., and Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co.

A concrete truck form Vulcan Materials Co. will be available for “Touch-A-Truck,” a chance to climb in and learn more about the vehicle. Shaffer’s BBQ and Sugar Creek Sweets will be on-site selling their delicious wares.

“This is a great way to get to know the police and other first responders serving your neighborhood,” says Lt. Adams. “Children will have the opportunity to interact with police officers and emergency personnel in a friendly, relaxed setting.”

In case of rain, the event will be moved into the Corron Community Development Center on campus.
