HVAC: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship, Journeymen, and Licensure Program

This full HVAC program contains the hours and content to satisfy the educational requirements for HVAC registered apprenticeships, as well as the educational requirements to obtain state HVAC licensure, and HVAC Journeyman status through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations (DPOR) in Virginia. There are four levels (HVAC Levels 1 – 4) offered, however depending on the students’ needs and occupational experience, not all four levels may be necessary.

Students entering into the Level 1 HVAC class do not need prior coursework or industry experience. Students also do not need to be currently working for an HVAC employer to start this program. The program is structured as a hybrid class, with a combination of both classroom and hands-on lab training, as well as an online program content. Students will attend classes no more than one evening per week. Many students successfully work full time and part time while attending the program. The Level 1 class introduces students to basic safety, introduction to the HVAC profession, introduction to construction math, hand tools, power tools, and how to read construction drawings.

As students progress into the higher levels of the HVAC programs, (Levels 2 – 4) students will learn HVAC trade math, copper, and plastic piping techniques, soldering and brazing, working with ferrous metal, piping practices, basic electricity, introduction to cooling, introduction to heating, air distribution systems, and HVAC code and permitting regulations.
