At Laurel Ridge Community College, we’re proud to offer programs that not only educate, but also empower our students to pursue rewarding careers. One such program gaining significant attention is our Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training, recently spotlighted during a conversation on The Valley Today with host Janet Michael.

Joining the discussion were Guy Curtis, our director of marketing, and Jeff Burkhart, senior director of operations for the driver training program with our providing partner, Ancora Education. Together, they shared insights into the growing demand for CDL training and how Laurel Ridge is meeting that need.

“There’s a lot of interest in CDL classes right now,” Curtis said. “We offer weekday and weekend options to make it accessible for working adults. It’s one of many in-demand programs we offer that lead to high-demand jobs and valuable credentials.”

explained that the CDL program is designed to be both efficient and effective.

“It’s a four-week course – one week in the classroom and three weeks of hands-on training,” he said. “Once you have your CDL, the opportunities are endless – local , regional, and even national positions across a variety of industries.”

The conversation also addressed the evolving image of the trucking industry. Burkhart emphasized that truck driving is no longer a male-dominated field.

“We’re seeing more women and people from diverse backgrounds entering the profession,” he said. “Modern trucks are safer, truck stops are more accommodating, and connectivity on the road has improved dramatically.”

Financial aid is another key factor in making the program more accessible. There are various funding packages which can significantly reduce or even eliminate the cost of training.

“Many employers are also stepping up to sponsor their employees, helping them transition from warehouse roles to driving careers,” he said.

Michael added a personal touch to the conversation, sharing stories from her husband’s experience as a truck driver. She painted a vivid picture of the lifestyle – whether it’s local deliveries or cross-country hauls, each route offers its own rhythm and rewards.

Burkhart noted that many students receive job offers before they even complete the program.

“There’s a real need for qualified drivers,” he said. “It’s a career path with strong earning potential and job security.”

To help prospective students explore the program, Laurel Ridge offers free introductory courses and one-on-one coaching. As the conversation wrapped up, one thing was clear: earning a CDL through Laurel Ridge Community College is more than just a credential – it’s a gateway to a flexible, well-paying career with room to grow. With strong support, expert training, and financial aid options, we’re here to help you take the wheel and drive your future forward.
