At Laurel Ridge Community College, we are proud to offer a range of programs designed to support our diverse student body. One of our standout initiatives is the TRiO program, which plays a crucial role in helping first-generation students, low-income students, and students with documented disabilities succeed in their academic journeys.
Recently, our director of public relations and special events, Brandy Boies, and our TRiO director, Vivi Meder, had the opportunity to discuss the impact of the program on The River 95.3’s The Valley Today with host Janet Michael.
The TRiO program has a rich history, rooted in the initiatives established by President Lyndon B. Johnson to combat poverty and support education. Meder explained the various components and services we offer through TRiO, such as free printing, laptop loaner programs, gas cards, food pantry access, and specialized academic advising. We believe in creating a supportive community, which is why we have a dedicated TRiO lounge space and offer specialized tutoring tailored to the needs of our TRiO students.

We understand the unique challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students, including a potential lack of support from home and the sometimes-intimidating aspects of college life. Our TRiO program is designed to bridge these gaps.
Advocacy and public support are vital for the continued success of the TRiO program. Boies and Meder emphasized the importance of community members in ensuring we continue to receive the necessary federal funding. Individuals can contact their elected representatives to support the program.
We are committed to fostering an environment where all students can thrive, and the TRiO program is a testament to our dedication to student success. We invite you to learn more about our programs and join us in supporting the educational journeys of our students.
