Laurel Ridge will be celebrating Global Awareness Day Wednesday, March 22 on its Middletown Campus with presentations, food tasting, music and prize drawings. The public is welcome at events.

Leading up to the March 22 activities, international student presentations are planned for Monday, March 20, with discussions and screenings for Tuesday, March 21.

Laurel Ridge has 182 international students hailing from 58 nations.GAD

Students will give presentations on Puerto Rican history and culture, starting at 10 a.m. March 20 in the William H. McCoy Theatre in Alson H. Smith Hall. This will be followed by presentations on Honduras, China, Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Morocco.

On March 21, the film “Skin Deep:  Race and Ethnicity on Campus” will be shown at 9 a.m. in the McCoy Theatre, followed by discussion. The session will begin again at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m., “Two Kenyan Guys Taking on Texas” will be screened.

A variety of events are planned in the Corron Center on March 22. International cultural tables will be set up – complete with food tastings and a chance to talk with students from overseas – from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mariachi Los Monarcas are performing from noon to 1 p.m., with dance lessons available, and there will be raffle basket drawings from 2:30-3 p.m.

History Professor Curtis Morgan, formerly with the CIA, will give a military/political overview of East Asia from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the McCoy Theatre. From 11 a.m. to noon, Economics Professor Jim Brumbaugh will talk about global population. And, student Moder Mohialden will discuss Iran starting at 1:30 p.m.
