For now, Azaz Shah works as a personal trainer, but he’s flexing his academic muscles as a student in the nursing program at Laurel Ridge Community College. Azaz had his choice of several colleges, but Laurel Ridge was the right choice for him.
“I liked how the program was set up,” says Azaz. “It just stood out to me. That’s what got me into coming here. In the long term, I want to be a nurse practitioner, and I feel as if Laurel Ridge has this community college program that will help facilitate my goal to become an RN.”
Azaz says that Laurel Ridge’s affordability made it the right fit for him. He says that while the tuition is attractive, the facilities are in step with the needs of today’s employers.
“The nursing program has been great so far,” says Azaz. “The faculty’s amazing. The students are great. The
way the program is set up is great. The clinicals, the equipment we have in the facility, and the mannequins are top-notch. It’s impacted me greatly when it comes to choosing my next step in becoming a nurse practitioner and also getting a bachelor’s degree.
“Nursing school is intense. When I’m in class, I feel that it’s more relaxing than I was anticipating it would be. It’s an environment that makes you want to learn. The professors push, but they don’t push you to the point where you break. They’re always there to help you. They give you good feedback. And the students around you are great people. You want to come to class. It’s a good environment.”
Laurel Ridge Community College was known as Lord Fairfax Community College until June 2022. For consistency purposes, the college will be referenced as Laurel Ridge going forward.
