Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n\n\n\nAs daughters\, Betty Kilby Baldwin and Phoebe Kilby have found a way to live Dr. King’s dream. \n\n\n\nThey will share their powerful story of discovering their family connection and embarking on a journey of reconciliation and reparation. Their talk draws on lessons from their 2021 book\, Cousins: Connected Through Slavery – A Black Woman and a White Woman Discover Their Past and Each Other (UMW 2023 Reading Program selection\, Social Justice).  \n\n\n\nBooks will be available for purchase at the event.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nDr. Betty Kilby Fisher Baldwin\n\n\n\n\nIntegrated Warren County High School in 1959 after her father sued the school board under Brown v. Board of Education.\n\n\n\nAuthor of Wit\, Will & Walls.\n\n\n\nMBA and Honorary Doctorate from Shenandoah University.\n\n\n\nShe and Phoebe have presented nationwide at universities\, schools\, churches\, and conferences.\n\n\n\n\nPhoebe Kilby\n\n\n\n\nBaltimore native; degrees in Botany (B.S.) and Environmental Management (M.E.M.) from Duke University.\n\n\n\nWorked as an urban and environmental planner.\n\n\n\nLater earned a degree in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University.\n\n\n\nActive in the Coming to the Table movement\, where she researched her family’s connection to slavery—leading to her discovery of cousin Betty.\n\n\n\n\nBetty’s story and the desegregation of Warren County High School in 1959 are featured in the documentary Knocking Down Walls (2023)\, created by Spotswood High School students and Rockingham County Public Schools staff. DESCRIPTION:Are you a parenting student interested in learning strategies to help you cope with stress? Sign up for mindfulness training\, with the option of being part of study happening right here at Laurel Ridge!  \nThese classes are part of an academic research project. The first 10 individuals to sign up and complete all requirements will receive $50. For Full Rules and More Information\, please visit the Mindfulness Training for Parent Scholars landing page (laurelridge.edu/mindfulness)! \n\n\nWho Can Participate?\nLaurel Ridge students who consider themselves parents of a child under 18. \nWhen?\nWednesday\, September 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\nPick a session each Wednesday of September: 9:30 a.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:30 p.m. \nWhat Is Happening?\nThere will be 4 in-person classes on mindfulness\, teaching you skills that might help with stress and coping. Feel free to bring your child and have them with you. It will be a relaxed and fun environment. Classes will be held in the Cub House (our family-friendly study lounge) at 9:30 a.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Come to either one. Bring a yoga mat if you like\, but we’ll have plenty available. If being on the floor isn’t comfortable\, you can sit in a chair. Dress comfortably. \n\nWeek 1: Orientation & Body Scan\nWeek 2: Yoga/Mindful Movement\nWeek 3: Guided Meditation – very guided; mindful listening and speech\nWeek 4: Guided Meditation – less guided
