Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n\n\n\nAs daughters\, Betty Kilby Baldwin and Phoebe Kilby have found a way to live Dr. King’s dream. \n\n\n\nThey will share their powerful story of discovering their family connection and embarking on a journey of reconciliation and reparation. Their talk draws on lessons from their 2021 book\, Cousins: Connected Through Slavery – A Black Woman and a White Woman Discover Their Past and Each Other (UMW 2023 Reading Program selection\, Social Justice).  \n\n\n\nBooks will be available for purchase at the event.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nDr. Betty Kilby Fisher Baldwin\n\n\n\n\nIntegrated Warren County High School in 1959 after her father sued the school board under Brown v. Board of Education.\n\n\n\nAuthor of Wit\, Will & Walls.\n\n\n\nMBA and Honorary Doctorate from Shenandoah University.\n\n\n\nShe and Phoebe have presented nationwide at universities\, schools\, churches\, and conferences.\n\n\n\n\nPhoebe Kilby\n\n\n\n\nBaltimore native; degrees in Botany (B.S.) and Environmental Management (M.E.M.) from Duke University.\n\n\n\nWorked as an urban and environmental planner.\n\n\n\nLater earned a degree in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University.\n\n\n\nActive in the Coming to the Table movement\, where she researched her family’s connection to slavery—leading to her discovery of cousin Betty.\n\n\n\n\nBetty’s story and the desegregation of Warren County High School in 1959 are featured in the documentary Knocking Down Walls (2023)\, created by Spotswood High School students and Rockingham County Public Schools staff. It symbolizes courage\, survival\, and hope—a visible reminder that domestic violence has no place in our community and that support is available for all survivors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibit\n\n\n\nThe show will feature original artwork created by Laurel Ridge students and local community members. Starting at 9:30am\, The Laurel Center will be on Campus at the SUB Lounge Information Desk to discuss DV questions and offer Education and Resources. Then from 11am until 12:00pm\, Student Life will be in the SUB Lounge giving out DV Themed Bracelets and Stickers as well as Purple Frosted Cupcakes! At 12:30pm join Student Life\, The Laurel Center\, & The Phoenix Project as we host a DV Awareness Luncheon in SHP 138. Learn about different resources and signs to watch out for. After the presentation\, we will have a Q&A session. In Addition\, we will be serving a light lunch for those who attend.  \n\n\n\nAlso\, All week show your support and wear Purple!
