EC: Standard-Based Learning, Effective Grading Practices, and Mastery Learning
Monday, June 26 @ 9:00 AM - Monday, June 26 @ 12:00 PM
What do we care about more: Learning or Grading? Educators always choose Learning as the ideal, but in reality, traditional assessment practices cause the focus of teachers, students, and parents to be on Grading. Traditional grade-focused practices negatively impact learning since student progress is directly related to effective assessment strategies. Institutional inertia has led to this reality, and to overcome it we must be willing to take an “Assessment Journey” toward learning-based assessment strategies. Successful Assessment Journeys happen organically, with growth in instructional philosophy creating long-term meaningful change. They aren’t the result of top-down policy-driven efforts that only lead to short-term compliance. Be encouraged, empowered, and equipped to take and lead that Journey!
